Hotels with a gaming floor

These are casino hotels, described here as hotels. Each has a gaming floor, and each also has rooms, restaurants, a theatre or a spa, and a setting — a river island, a gorge above a waterfall, a marina, a lakeside — that accounts for most of what a stay actually consists of. The gaming floor is listed as one facility among several, which is how it sits in the building.

Montreal Casino & Hotel

Montreal, Quebec

The building began as the French pavilion for Expo 67, a stack of aluminium fins on Île Notre-Dame in the St Lawrence, and its afterlife has kept that silhouette intact. As a hotel it is an island property first: the surrounding parkland, the rowing basin and the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve are all on the same small island, and the city skyline sits across the water. Dining runs from a buffet to a fine-dining room, and a cabaret theatre programmes through the year. A gaming floor occupies several levels of the pavilion — one facility among a number, and the reason the address exists, but not the whole of a stay here. Fallsview Casino Resort

Niagara Falls, Ontario

Fallsview is cut into the escarpment above the Horseshoe Falls, which means the hotel is entered at one level and drops several storeys down the gorge — an arrangement that lets a large share of the rooms look directly at the waterline. The resort carries a full hotel programme: a spa, a theatre that books touring acts, a shopping galleria and a spread of restaurants, plus enclosed walkways to the Fallsview tourist district so you can cross in winter without going outside. The gaming floor is one component of that programme. For most guests the view does the heavy lifting, particularly in the hour the falls are lit. River Rock Casino Resort

Richmond, British Columbia

River Rock sits on the arm of the Fraser River in Richmond, with its own marina and a Canada Line station at the door, which puts Vancouver's airport a few minutes away and the downtown core about twenty. That position has shaped the property: it works as an airport hotel, a concert venue and a riverside resort at once. The show theatre is a serious room, big enough for touring names, and the restaurant list leans on Richmond's exceptional Chinese food scene. There is a gaming floor, as the name says, though it is one wing of a building that also holds a spa, ballrooms and a long river frontage. Casino Rama Resort

Rama, Ontario

Casino Rama stands on the land of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation near Orillia, about ninety minutes north of Toronto and within sight of the Lake Couchiching cottage country that fills up each summer. It was the first commercial casino of its kind in Ontario and it has grown into a resort: a hotel tower, a spa, a long list of restaurants and an entertainment centre that has hosted an unusually large share of touring musicians for a room that size. First Nations art and design are carried through the public spaces. The gaming floor is one of the facilities; the amphitheatre and the lake account for most of the rest.
